Rachel and Sam and I had been driving all morning looking for migratory waterfowl when the phone buzzed…  “PINK FOOTED GOOSE seen three minutes ago… eight minutes away!”  The tiny little engine of the car shrieked, and we raced through the woods leaving a trail of fallen leaves blowing in our wake.  Approaching a little bridge, a small crowd had already gathered, scopes pointed at a flock of Canada geese. The crowd had the typical birder range from inviting and friendly to super pretentious.  One kind soul standing next to us invited our little crew to look through his beautiful scope at a smaller dark goose in amongst the flock.

Just why Pinkfeet are showing up in Northeastern North America is an interesting question.  Both the Greenland and Iceland breeding populations are expanding, alongside a newly arrived population of Canada Geese.  It is thought that when the Canadas migrate South, they bring along some of their new friends from the middle of the Atlantic.drawing-6
