Jays are “just right” birds.  They aren’t the twittery little puffballs that sew dresses for Cinderella.  At the same time, they don’t have the “Game of Thrones” pluck-your-eyeball-from-your-skull attitude of their larger raven and crow cousins.   Instead, they have just the right balance of brash behavior and beautiful coloration to catch our eye and become mascots and representatives.

Green Jays make it over the Mexican border as a South Texas specialty and scream for our attention.  Stunningly patterned in yellow, green, blue, and black they can be hard to miss as they dominate the feeders and charm everyone.  Walking around Bentsen Rio Grande S.P., or any of the other Rio Grande Valley parks, you quickly realize that they are the ambassador species for this rich and recovering habitat, and that you are somewhere different, somewhere special.
